Expert Answers about Chevrolet Catalytic Converters

  • Are Catalytic Converters Directional
  • The P0420 DTC you mention means that one or both of the catalytic converters isn't operating as efficiently as it or they should be. Catalytic converters aren't usually directional, but if the converter has the port for the o2 sensor built into it, and if the converter's been reversed so that the downstream sensor is sitting upstream of the converter, it would explain why you're getting the DTC.

  • Can a Vehicle Run without Catalytic Converters Installed
  • We can't ever recommend you remove emissions related components on a vehicle. If you remove catalytic converters on a vehicle you will end up having Service Engine Soon codes pop on the dash of your vehicle. But to answer your question directly, your vehicle will still run just fine without catalytic converters installed. Cats do not actually help the engine run in any way. All they do is clean up the emissions. The O2 sensors before the cats are what is used for the air/fuel mixture of...

  • 2007 Nissan Frontier Engine Just Revs And Wont Accelerate When Stepping On The Gas
  • There may be a few reasons why your 2007 Nissan Frontier can't pick up speed, and the engine just revs. One reason is you may have a clogged catalytic converter; if your catalytic converter is clogged then that may cause your engine to bog down and not accelerate. Another possibility is, a bad fuel filter. A bad fuel filter will not allow enough fuel into the engine and will cause your motor to bog down after a certain speed, like the catalytic converter mentioned above. This also may...

  • Error Code P0420 After Replacing Exhaust Manifold Gasket and Using MagnaFlow Catalytic Converter
  • The most common things that can cause a P0420 error code are bad oxygen sensors, engine coolant temperature sensor malfunction (does not seem likely given what you have said), leaking exhaust, or a bad catalytic converter. Since you had a manifold gasket issue, it sounds like there could still be a leak in the system somewhere. This can happen with gasket replacement if any remnants of the old gasket were still on the block or manifold when the new one was installed. It could also have...

  • Catalytic Converters on a 1997 Chevy Z71 K1500 with 5.7L Making a Lot of Noise
  • I would think that if it is a manufacturer defect that the issue would have revealed itself earlier than it did. Magnaflow parts do have a limited lifetime warranty though so you could potentially get replacements via a warranty claim. Damage could occur to the exhaust from excessive heat, physical damage, frequent use of dirty fuel (with a high lead content). Back when leaded gas was still available my dad would use it because it was cheaper, even though the car had a catalytic converter....
